We Are The Same
There are so many mediums who are also counselors, healers, first responders, and psychotherapists. I believe that when working with people, the most important element is healing. And, as the healers that navigate both worlds, it can be challenging to work in the Muggle world.
Most of my Medium friends call me Carolan, but my legal name is Carol. It's not that I necessarily wanted a "stage name," but I had to differentiate between the two worlds, at least on paper. Carolan is a nickname that I adopted for my mediumship. When I graduated from college and started working, I was compelled to be honest with my prospective employer about the fact that I was a medium. I didn’t want to feel like I was hiding anything, and that information was already public. I was a little terrified that someone would find out. When I told my prospective employer, I was promptly uninvited to work there.
I understand how being a Medium in a job like counseling might make some people uncomfortable. Today, I feel that it's a bit like announcing that you're Catholic, Christian, Spiritualist, or Buddhist. It really shouldn't come up in therapy at all because we are not discussing my beliefs, but my clients. However, I wanted to make sure that I was being ethically correct and had an ethics consultation with the American Counseling Association. In that conversation, we discussed dual relationships (such as an accountant and a counselor not being able to serve both roles with the same client) and the importance of keeping those two things separate. In that same conversation, we discussed how, as counselors, we cannot do anything that would bring shame to our profession. I'm not certain, but it did feel like a little shade was thrown in my direction.
I keep those things to myself and have created some privacy on social media to avoid appearing to have a "dual relationship." From time to time, it happens that my clients make the discovery, and I inform them that, ethically, I cannot do both. If they are my client, I am unable to do mediumship with them, and I refer them to some wonderful friends who are mediums.
There has been a shift within the counseling profession to address "attuning to your client," which is another term for blending—and being "intuitive and attending" to what you are feeling in the room with your client. There is one well-known trauma therapist who, during her lectures, openly shares her intuitive experiences with the participants.
It does happen from time to time that mediumship slips out in normal conversations, often during activities like giving examples: "Say you're in a red car and you get hit and bump your head." My client then responds with, "That happened to me in a red car. I still have the mark, see." Then I will say something profound, like "Wow, you do have a mark."
I don't think you can be a therapist and not be intuitive. There are also times when I think the work (blending, attending, and attuning) opens the door for therapists to begin realizing their blossoming mediumship. There are many conversations I have with interns and new counselors about how they are overwhelmed by the experiences they are having in their counseling sessions due to their sensitivity. It took me a while to realize that by not blocking it (more like ignoring it), I did much better and felt more like myself by allowing that power to work through me in all situations. There is no way to separate a medium from their mediumship. We are the same.

Author of the Month Jennifer Vroom

All Roads Lead Inward is a first-of-its-kind book that invites the reader to leap into the abyss, whatever that means for them, so they can uncover their true path. They ride shotgun as Vroom navigates, not only the twists and turns of unfamiliar roads, but the roller coaster of emotions one experiences with the death of their old life before they can birth the new. Each place she visits, from Sedona to Mount Shasta and Joshua Tree to Devils Tower, provides new insights, divine signs, and chance encounters that weave together into a magical tapestry of healing and growth. https://tinyurl.com/26bhhmyp

Most of us, at some point, are faced with a crossroads and must make a choice that's scary and difficult. The truth is that we don't have a choice at all. The crossroads is the moment you realize you can no longer deny that something is missing from your life - something you cannot live without, because it is the whole reason you are here. You may not be able to put a name to it, yet you've felt it nagging at you for months, years, or even decades; now, you must leap into the unknown and follow your soul's calling. That is where Jennifer Vroom found herself when, at age forty-six, she made the heart-wrenching decision to end her twelve-year relationship, give away almost all her belongings, and venture out on a solo five-month road trip with her inner guidance as the only GPS.
